Black Image
Black Image is a 6 piece indigenous band from Wujal Wujal, Hope Vale and Cooktown in Queensland Australia.
After forming in 1997 the band has travelled throughout Australia performing their blend of rock, reggae, country, blues and traditional indigenous music.
The members hail from three indigenous communities of Hope Vale, Wujal Wujal and Coen.
The all indigenous band consists of five brothers and one cousin. The two lead guitarists are Vincent Harrigan and Anselm Harrigan with Dylan Harrigan on lead vocal and rhythm guitar, Damien Harrigan on vocals and clap sticks, Clifford Harrigan on drums and Quinton Walker on bass guitar. Their music consists of reggae, rock, blues, funk, country, Indigenous rock and their own originals.
Black Image performed their first gig at the local pub in Cooktown with many of the members still under the age of eighteen. Since then Black Image have performed in many Indigenous communities and townships across Cape York.
Understanding their role in the community and recognising the importance of a solid education, the band are currently working together with the State Library of Queensland to encourage the use of library facilities by the indigenous community.
CD Review:
Durbbil Dikarrba

Since starting out in 1997, Black Image had been building up a compilation of songs which they put together and recorded in 2002.
Durrbil means red soil in Guugu Yimithirr from their mother's side, and Dikarrba refers to the Thompson Creek area of Wujal Wujal in the Kuku Yalangi language from their father's side.Described as a CD "full of happy songs that people can dance to", Durrbil Dikkarba was met with strong anticipation by Black Image fans.
Compilation CD:
Saltwater Songs: Indigenous Maritime Music from Tropical Australia"
Black Image's song "Beautiful Land and Sea" is featured in this compilation CD. The songs tell of their family, their land and the sea, in particular the spectacular rainforest and reefs near Wujal Wujal and the beautiful coloured sands of Hopevale.
Saltwater Songs was produced through Central Queensland University by Karl Neuenfeldt and Cairns studio whiz Nigel Pegrum.
It features Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander performers from Queensland and the Northern Territory with the emphasis on indigenous maritime music.
