A New Era for Tourism in Coen

Balkanu has recently purchased the Homestead Guest House in Coen.

This 11 bedroom accommodation business has been operating since 1933. The Guest House comes with over 2 hectares of land running down to Lankelly Creek (which flows through until late in the dry season and is crocodile free) and a five bedroom residence.

This acquisition provides Balkanu with the opportunity to grow the services currently on offer at the Guest House. The existing accommodation, in the short term, will be upgraded to include fly screens and air-conditioning. There is scope to employ and develop a trainee manager, two housekeepers and a grounds/maintenance person

through the initial support of training and employment programs.

In the medium term Balkanu is investigating further commercial investment in accommodation suited to new market sectors – self-contained motel-style units. Early indications are that the town could support up to thirty new beds.

Balkanu will also establish a quality camping/caravan/trailer area at the rear of the Guest House. Coen is ideally located as a rest point for people making the trip to the Cape. Currently the choices for camping are either bush camping at the Bend (just north of Coen), or heading another hour north and camping at the Archer River Roadhouse.

The Guest House camp ground will provide a safe, pleasant stop off point for tour operators and travellers, including families, and will allow access to the high-quality Guest House facilities and laundry.

This will create the opportunity for local people to develop cultural, adventure and eco tourism products suited to these visitors.
